A rapier is a bladed weapon with significantly fast attack speed. While it has low base damage, it deals significantly more damage to unarmored foes.

Unarmored Damage Bonus
Inflicts 300% of normal damage to unarmored mobs.
Damage Absorption
Absorbs 25% of damage inflicted to the user as 2 durability damage to the weapon.

Notes
It remains useful through all progression stages due to its damage bonuses and damage absorption.
The rapier's damage absorption ability makes it a great defensive weapon.
The rapier is best suited for PVE situations since most mobs spawn unarmored. It deals low damage in PVP situations since most players will be wearing armor.
Tips
The rapier loses durability quickly in combat situations, making the Unbreaking enchantment useful to apply.
Because the rapier does not deal high damage to armored mobs, it is recommended to carry another weapon that can penetrate armor like the warhammer.

It is considered the most powerful weapon type out of all the Spartan weapons due to its triple damage multiplier
