A quarterstaff is a blunt, cheap-to-craft weapon that deals low damage.

Notes
It is very useful during early game progression due to its reach property and low cost.
Tips
You can use the
Vitamins bauble to nullify the Two-Handed Mining Fatigue debuff. This allows you to swing the quarterstaff at max speed with an item in the off-hand.It is recommended to replace your normal axe with a quarterstaff as it possesses the same mining capabilities but also deals significant damage.
Trivia
The quarterstaff is the cheapest weapon to craft that has reach.
